Smith’s of Cohoes

171 Remsen St, Cohoes, NY 12047

Last Wednesday afternoon I happened to be near Cohoes and decided to check my maps for a local joint with wings. Smith’s had a 4.5 rating with 175 Google reviews and around 4 stars on Yelp so I made the short trip to check it out. The place definitely has an old school feel, a long bar when you first walk in, lots of beautiful old woodwork, and a nice dining room in the back.

I placed a takeout order with the bartender for 2 orders of 10 wings, both mild garlic parm as that was once again the most typically ordered flavor. Each order is $11 and includes carrots, celery, and bleu cheese. A nice server helped the bartender with the order since she seemed unsure of mixing the two flavors; as usual it was no issue. I sat for about 30 minutes waiting for the wings, entertaining small talk from a couple of nice locals (one who was eating the same wings I ordered). I would have liked to order a specialty cocktail while I waited but they had none on their list.

Once we opened the wings, we could see the amount of sauce and oil was overwhelming. I could see garlic in the mixture but when I tasted the wings, I didn’t taste the garlic. In fact, the flavor really isn’t anything I can accurately describe other than to say it was rather nonexistent. Not sure if that was the oil or just not a great sauce mixture but that was disappointing. Add to that the crispiness wasn’t really there either. I grabbed a carrot and decided to give the bleu cheese a try but it also had a “flavor” that was average at best. I dread giving a bad review but it’s the name of the game. I can say I’m glad I tried Smith’s and got them on the list, but I don’t see myself craving their wings anytime soon. Maybe one day I’ll make a “detour” there for something else. They do have an array of offerings on their menu I may go back to try.
